When Shadows Divided
Nada aimed for nothing more than warmth.
After her father passed away, she had no one left.
She left her country, and she left everything behind.
She traveled to her sister’s house… where the daughters lived, where a home and a life she knew nothing about awaited.
Ruba received her with a cautious tenderness, saying:
“Make yourself at home…”
Nada smiled, unaware of what lay between the lines.
Her enthusiasm outpaced her wisdom.
She believed that proximity alone was enough to melt distances away.
Yet… only a few months passed before everything changed.
Silent glances, heavy words.
Was Nada disrupting the household's rhythm?
Was she meddling in things that did not concern her? Expressing opinions where silence was required? Disruption to a mother barely holding together the fragments left by her husband's absence?
Ruba… tried to swallow those glances.
Yet she found herself caught between loyalty to her sister… and allegiance to her daughters.
Then, the unthinkable happened.
The dispute erupted: sharp, wounding, chaotic.
Nada and the daughters hurled statements and words at one another that were beneath any of them.
Ruba, who had previously disagreed with her sister in a painful calm…
Found that these statements, words, and that heavy calm felt like a fall from a great height.
📜
Uncle Jamal, a friend of their late father and like an uncle to them both…
Heard what had transpired, though he could do little but process the situation from across the seas.
He tried to mediate a reconciliation… but the wounds were too deep to heal quickly.
🍂
Nada was moved to the home of Aunt Su'ad, a gentle and quiet relative who welcomed her with a smile:
“Come in, my daughter…”
Nada did not cry, but her voice was broken as she thanked her aunt.
That night, Uncle Jamal sat with his head in his hands:
How could he secure the future of a young woman with no support?
How could he provide her with dignity and a roof over her head?
And the aunt, despite her kindness… for how long?
What if she fell ill?
What if circumstances grew tight?
Questions haunted him… as the night wore on.
As for Nada, she sat in the corner of the room, her heart whispering:
“I was wrong to think that love alone was enough…
My sister is exhausted, and I did and said more than I should have.”
🕊️
Days passed… neither reconciliation nor total estrangement.
Nada thought about finding work, about a fresh start.
Ruba missed her, yet did not know how to make the first move.
And Uncle Jamal?
He was still thinking, weighing every option…
And in a faint voice, he prayed:
“We ask Allah to reunite the family, preserve affection, and grant a good end.”
Then one morning, news reached Nada of the uncle’s passing.
She tried to gather her tears and hold them back so as not to distress Aunt Su'ad…
Muttering a quiet prayer:
“May Allah grant you the highest dwellings of Paradise, my uncle…”
