The Laws of Decline: A Reading into the Rhetoric of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance) in the Qur'an
The collapse of civilizations and the downfall of nations do not occur suddenly like a thunderbolt; rather, it is a gradual decline that begins deep within the soul and society until it permeates the entire entity of the nation. The Wise Revelation came to unveil these crucial milestones, where the term "Jahiliyyah" (Ignorance) is annexed to four distinct words in the Holy Qur'an, drawing a precise blueprint of civilizational bankruptcy:
1. Corruption of Hearts and Beliefs: The first milestone manifests in the divine statement: “Thinking of Allah other than the truth—the thought of Jahiliyyah (ignorance)” [Surah Ali 'Imran: 154]. Here, the mind loses its certainty and its perception falters, seeing falsehood as truth and truth as a lie, leaning toward material doubts that lead it astray into valleys of wandering and frustration.
2. Corruption of Legislation and Authority: This is followed by the divine rebuke: “Is it then the judgment of Jahiliyyah (ignorance) that they seek? And who is better than Allah in judgment for a people who are certain in faith?” [Surah Al-Ma'idah: 50]. Whenever divine justice is replaced by human desires and the impulses of the mighty, the pact of security is shattered, and governance becomes subservient to narrow, tainted interests.
3. Corruption of Morals and the Family Fabric: Deviation does not stop there; it extends to corrupt ethics and the family structure, as expressed in the noble verse: “And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves as was the display of the former Jahiliyyah (ignorance)” [Surah Al-Ahzab: 33]. Here, nurturing principles collapse, and values are consumed by superficial appearances that undermine the pillar of upbringing, producing a generation stripped of fortitude and identity.
4. Social Corruption and Fragmentation: The affliction reaches its climax with the corruption of society and the fracturing of unity, as the Almighty states: “When those who disbelieved had put in their hearts chauvinism—the chauvinism of Jahiliyyah (ignorance)” [Surah Al-Fat-h: 26]. Tribal and sectarian fanaticism ignites, and grudges blind perceptions from hearing the truth, causing brothers to fight over the illusions of narrow affiliation.
When these four pillars complete their hold on any nation—a polluted intellect, an oppressive authority, a degraded society, and a fragmented populace—the laws of collapse inevitably fall upon it, and the millstones of time grind against it. Thus, it continues to descend down the stairs of deterioration until it is driven helplessly toward the humiliation of the abyss and the total eradication of its legacy.
