What Truly Matters is Who You Are Before Allah!

In the book Sifat al-Safwah by Ibn al-Jawzi:

Beware of being widely praised in public while your faults remain hidden in secret!

O my friend: What truly matters is who you are in the sight of Allah!

For how many are well-known on earth, yet completely unknown in the heavens!

And how many are unknown on earth, yet famous in the heavens!

When such a person supplicates, the angels say: "O Lord, a familiar voice from a well-known servant!"

By Allah, if all of creation were to praise you endlessly, it would benefit you nothing if you are otherwise in the sight of Allah!

And if people across the east and west were to criticize you, it would harm you nothing if you are otherwise in the sight of Allah!

Be ever mindful not to beautify your deeds for people while making them ugly before Allah!

Luqman said to his son: "Beware of showing people that you fear Allah while your heart is wicked!"

The True Measure of Stature and the Weight of Hearts

Scales on earth may be flawed, and human tongues may elevate some through praise or demean others through blame. Yet, the scale with the Lord of the Heavens is the most upright and just; it measures neither physical bodies nor idle gossip, but rather the hearts and that which lies hidden within the chests.

 Hidden Inner Intentions: Whenever praise for a person is prolonged in gatherings, it would be more fitting for them to seek shelter in their awe of Allah. The righteous servant flees from the praise of creation to the generosity of the Creator, knowing that Allah’s gaze upon them in privacy is the unblemished truth.

 A Voice in the Heavens: How beautiful it is to remain silent among the people of earth, hidden without fingers pointing at you, until—when you raise your hands in supplication amidst the darkness of the night—the realms of the heavens resound with the call of the close angels: "O Lord, a familiar voice from a well-known servant!" That, indeed, is true elevation and honor that never fades.

 Purity of Purpose: The praise of mankind will not carry a servant to Paradise, nor will their condemnation cast them into Hellfire. Therefore, make your sole desire the pleasure of the One and Only, and allow no share for people in your intentions. For whoever beautifies themselves before people with what they do not truly possess, yet falls from Allah's grace, shall not benefit from the praise of the entire world, whether heads bow to them or raise in their honor.

May Allah make us and you among those whose inner secrets are concealed from creation yet beautiful before the Creator, and among those known in the heavens for the sincerity of their trust and the beauty of their devotion.

These are but words that emerged from a heart that profoundly honors knowledge and its people, shining with the light of the noble meanings contained in that great legacy.

Indeed, good speech settles only in pure souls that recognize its true value and cherish its stature. May Allah make us and you among those of whom it is said in the heavens: "Devout, pure, and hidden servants."
