Etiquette and Purification of Lawful Earnings

Conditions for Wholesome Earnings and Blessed Provision

"Whoever desires for their earnings to be pure and wholesome must observe five things."

Wholesome earning is not merely a matter of striving on earth or accumulating wealth; rather, it is a way of life and a faith-based value built upon five fundamental pillars:

• Prioritizing the Rights of Allah Almighty:"First: That one does not delay any of Allah Almighty’s obligatory duties for the sake of earning, nor allow any deficiency to affect them."
  
  Thus, worldly trade should never be prioritized over trade for the Hereafter, nor should physical striving for provision distract from performing religious duties and obligations in their proper times.
• Refraining from Harm and Injustice:"Second: That one does not harm any of Allah Almighty’s creation for the sake of earning."
  
  Thus, one's livelihood must not be built upon monopoly, deception, fraud, or causing injury to people.
• Sincerity of Intention in Seeking Chaste Self-Sufficiency:"Third: That one intends by their earning to maintain self-respect and chastity for oneself and one's dependents, not merely to hoard and multiply wealth."
  
  Thus, the purpose of work is to protect one’s dignity from begging and to suffice those under one's care, not to boast, compete in accumulation, or be corrupted by wealth.
• Moderation and Avoiding Self-Exhaustion:"Fourth: That one does not strain or overexert oneself excessively in earning."
  
  For provision is already allotted, and extreme greed does not increase what has been decreed; rather, it consumes health and life, and deprives the heart of the peace that comes with reliance on Allah.
• Correct Creed and Reliance on the Supreme Provider:"Fifth: That one does not view their provision as coming from the work itself, but rather sees provision as coming from Allah Almighty..."
  
  For work and secondary causes are merely means and acts of devotion, while the true Provider and Bestower is Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, alone.

We ask Allah Almighty to grant us lawful, wholesome, and blessed earnings, and to aid us in obeying Him and worshipping Him in the best manner.
