A Reminder for Every Wise Person

The mobile phone is one of Allah’s great blessings and a powerful tool whose impact should never be underestimated. Yet, if misused, it can become a source of harm rather than benefit.

It has brought together in a single device what people once needed dozens of separate tools for. It has largely replaced the landline telephone, the computer, the television, the radio, the camera, the watch, the flashlight, the mirror, newspapers, magazines, many books, the wallet, the calendar, bank cards, and much more.

This is undoubtedly one of the remarkable achievements of modern technology for which we should be grateful. However, every blessing carries a responsibility, and every powerful tool comes with consequences when it is not used wisely.

Excessive use of the mobile phone can consume our time, waste our lives, weaken our relationship with our Lord, distract us from our duties, and divert us from our true priorities.

It may also weaken family bonds, as each person becomes absorbed in a screen instead of engaging with those around them. Affection fades, companionship diminishes, and people may live under one roof while their hearts grow increasingly distant.

For students, it can become a major distraction, turning them away from diligence, perseverance, and academic excellence. As a result, learning suffers, achievement declines, and success becomes little more than a wish instead of the reward of sincere effort.

Its excessive use may also have adverse effects on physical and mental health. It strains the eyes, harms the neck and spine, encourages inactivity, scatters concentration, and gradually influences one’s culture and way of thinking when information is received without discernment, critical thinking, or careful selection.

When a person surrenders to it without self-discipline or accountability, its influence may reach the heart itself. It can harden the heart, lead to heedlessness in the remembrance of Allah, and consume precious years that can never be recovered.

Therefore, let your mobile phone be your servant, not your master; let it be a means of doing good, not a doorway to heedlessness.

Use it for what benefits you. Seek Allah’s help, ask Him to protect you from its harms, benefit from its advantages, be mindful of its hidden costs, make good use of its strengths, and beware of its pitfalls.

We ask Allah to grant us safety and well-being from every trial, whether apparent or hidden, to bless us with the wisdom to make good use of His blessings, and never allow them to become a cause of our heedlessness or our misery.
